Austrian power in the streets of Berlin
In 2021, Traktionssysteme Austria has won one of the largest delivery contracts ever awarded in Europe. Up to 4,500 motors for the new Metro Berlin fleet will be manufactured and delivered within the next 10 years and an additional agreement was concluded for spare parts for the following 32 years Following the successful deployment of the first test vehicle of these new subway trains by Stadler on January 11, 2024, BVG continues its electrification path. Solaris, renowned for its electric buses, has received an order for 50 Solaris Urbino 18 electric Buses from BVG, with an option for an additional 650 vehicles.
‘We are delighted to equip Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe’s electric buses with our motors in collaboration with Solaris, highlighting our commitment to delivering reliable quality with our traction systems not only in the RAIL sector, but also in the ROAD division,’ said Robert Tencl, CEO of Traktionssysteme Austria. TSA motors have been integrated into Solaris vehicles since 2008, with their specially designed traction systems known for their durability and low maintenance.
The Solaris Urbino 18 electric bus runs with TSA motor
The Solaris Urbino 18 electric Bus, unveiled at the Busworld Expo in Brussels in October 2023, features a redesigned look, impressive range, and an emission-free driving experience. This is made possible by the powerful and efficient asynchronous motor, TMF 35-44-4, developed by Traktionssysteme Austria. In collaboration with Solaris, over 1,000 motors have already been delivered.
Equipped with TSA’s powerful electric motor and the latest generation of Solaris High Energy batteries, the bus can achieve a range of up to 600 km in its strongest configuration. With continuous motor power of 240 kW for 24-hour operations and nearly silent performance, the vehicle is an ideal mode of transportation for urban areas. The asynchronous motor reaches a peak power of 427 kW, allowing it to navigate demanding routes with ease.
Continuous testing in TSA’s dedicated test field and ongoing advancements make the TMF 35-44-4 asynchronous motor one of the top products on the market. The patented insulation system TSA-Dur® is incorporated, and the construction avoids the use of rare earth elements.
‘Sustainability is a key focus for us, permeating all our internal processes and developments. Our products contribute significantly to achieving a green planet in the transport of people and goods’ added Robert Tencl.
The Solaris Urbino 18 electric accommodates up to 145 passengers with top-notch comfort, thanks to its clever spatial design. Apart from Berlin, TSA traction motors are also deployed in Solaris electric buses in cities like Barcelona, Oslo, and Milan.
TSA drives technological progress crucial in the era of climate change
Traktionssysteme Austria’s expertise in propelling rail and road vehicles worldwide with robust and efficient electric motors, plays a crucial role in achieving climate goals and shaping a sustainable future. Despite its international presence and global use of traction drives in vehicles, the Austrian company emphasizes European production and short supply chains. The drive systems are developed and mostly produced in Wiener Neudorf, Lower Austria.
“It is imperative for us to strengthen Austria as an industrial hub. By continuously optimizing our products, investing in research, and expanding our production in Wiener Neudorf, we have positioned ourselves at the forefront of the market. This not only ensures secure jobs for our current employees, but will also create more job and training opportunities in the future,” stated Robert Tencl.
