TSA on the road
Decades of success in rail sector are now followed by TSA producing electric motors for light commercial vehicles.
A partnership for an emission-free future: Flux Mobility & TSA electrify light road commercial vehicles
In 2021, the Swiss company Flux Mobility noticed the potential for electrifying light road commercial vehicles and entered a niche market. By partnering with Traktionssysteme Austria (TSA), they have together ushered in a new era of vehicle electrification.
Within a short time period, TSA developed a drive solution for Flux Mobility to convert vehicles into electric cars. This was made possible by TSA’s 60 years of experience in integrating drives into rolling stock. With TSA’s permanent magnet electric motors, produced in Wiener Neudorf, vehicles weighing 3.5 to 8.5 tons can now be powered.
Marius Kohnle, Head of the ROAD Business Unit at TSA, stated, ‘The challenge of this project was developing a completely new motor design for the electrification of light commercial vehicles. We have never designed drives for such light vehicles before. This is also the first time we have included the inverter in the package. We now have a complete LD powertrain product in our portfolio. Our drive solution is a genuine alternative to existing systems with improved performance. But of course, our electric motors can still be used with other power electronics. This project is a huge success for us, made possible by the exceptional team effort and excellent collaboration with Flux Mobility.’
We electrify every commercial vehicle
With the development of the TMPW 25A-26-8 electric motor by Traktionssysteme Austria, vehicles are now driven with maximum efficiency and minimal power loss. The drivetrain achieves an efficiency of over 95%, with a peak torque of 1,200 Nm and a peak power of 220 kW. TSA’s products also feature intelligent electromagnetic winding configurations and therefore have an exceptional low-noise and low-vibration design.
During the development of the drive concept, some challenges were encountered. New production technologies were implemented, and the product had to meet the high-quality standards befitting a product ‘Made in Austria’, despite facing significant price pressure from competitors and being developed in a short timeframe of less than a year.
The result sets new benchmarks for electric motors in light commercial vehicles. Medium-duty and heavy-duty vehicles in these categories can now be equipped or retrofitted with TSA motors. TSA’s drive solutions for the road vehicle sector are sustainable and will significantly contribute to reducing CO2 emissions worldwide.
Flux Mobility – A Swiss Electric Pioneer
The Swiss startup Flux Mobility based in Winterthur aims to improve the environmental impact of light road vehicles through electrification. They retrofit vehicles with the new drive system. The company specializes in custom solutions tailored to customer requests, including special vehicles and configurations with or without all-wheel drive. Flux Mobility vehicles have already been adopted by the police and emergency services in Basel, as well as by the civil engineering department in Winterthur and Zurich. Some of the largest public authorities in Switzerland and companies in Germany also already rely on sustainable vehicle solutions from Flux Mobility.
‘We are thrilled by the concept of vehicle electrification and see tremendous potential for the future. With our new product solutions, we will capture this niche market and other segments,’ Kohnle said. ‘Our global goal is to reduce CO2 emissions and create sustainable solutions. This will only be possible if we implement smart and intelligent concepts. Flux Mobility uses this kind of concept, and we are proud to be part of this project. Thanks to the excellent collaboration, we are already looking forward to future projects with our Swiss neighbors!’
